What is a good reaction time?

On a visual test like this one, the average adult reacts in about 273 milliseconds. Under 250 ms is quick, under 220 ms is excellent, and under 200 ms puts you in roughly the top 4% — territory usually held by competitive gamers and athletes. Browser tests include a little display and input latency, so compare scores on the same device. Reaction time is one of the most age-sensitive mental abilities: it peaks around age 24 and slows gradually after, which is exactly what the reflex age in your result is based on.

How to get a faster score

  • Rest your finger on the screen or mouse button — travel distance costs real milliseconds.
  • Watch the center of the screen and let the color change come to you; don't scan around.
  • Sleep matters more than practice: tired brains react 20–40 ms slower.
  • A mouse is usually faster than a trackpad, and a high-refresh screen shaves a few more milliseconds.
  • Play a warm-up round first — almost everyone's first attempt is their slowest.

On a visual click test the average is about 273 ms. Under 250 ms is good, under 220 ms is excellent, and under 200 ms is elite — roughly the top 4% of people.

Is the BrainRank Reaction Time Test free?

Yes. All five rounds, your average, percentile, reflex age, animal tier, and the shareable challenge link are free — no payment, no account, no email.

Why did it say “too soon”?

You tapped while the screen was still red, or faster than 100 ms after the green — quicker than a human can physically see and react, so it counts as anticipation and the round restarts.

Why is my reaction time slower on my phone?

Touchscreens and displays add roughly 30–80 ms of latency before your tap is registered. Scores are still fair to compare on the same device — so challenge your friends on theirs.

Can I improve my reaction time?

Somewhat. Sleep, caffeine timing, and regular practice with fast games can shave off 10–30 ms. Age-related slowing is normal — the average 60-year-old reacts about 80 ms slower than the average 20-year-old.

How do challenge links work?

Your result screen builds a link that carries your average. Anyone who opens it plays the same five rounds against your number and instantly sees whether they beat you.
